Full Steam Ahead!

September has just begun and It's off to a great start! I have the pleasure of being involved in some really wonderful events and shows.

The Mount Gretna School of Art recently posted a call for entries concerning an exhibition of artworks inspired by Orchids. I happen to love orchids, and was very excited to hear of this open call. I created a mixed media piece, titled "Ghost" and entered the exhibitions call. I was thrilled earlier this week when i was informed that i was accepted! My piece along with many excellent works will be displayed at the WARE Center of Visual & Performing arts in downtown Lancaster on October 2nd!

Another show that I am really excited about is called “Decked Out”. The Parliament Arts Organization in York PA put it together, and its sure to be a success. The show is a collaborative art exhibit/fundraiser showcasing 6 Central Pennsylvania art galleries in the name of banding our local artist communities together.

The event will include a one-night-only art exhibit, with all pieces being auctioned off. 6 art galleries are collaborating together to display 150 hand painted, collaged, and manipulated skate decks that will be auctioned off. All proceeds will benefit the participating art galleries and Reid Menzer Memorial Skate Park.

Participating Galleries:

The Parliament Arts Organization of York,

PA HIVE artspace of York, PA

Sunshine Art+Design of Lancaster, PA

Discerning Eye Center for the Arts -DECA Building of Lancaster, PA

The Millworks of Harrisburg, PA

The Alchemy of Art of Baltimore, MD

In other exciting news, I will be teaching two classes at Pennsylvania College or Art & Design through the Continuing Education Department! I really cant wait to get back into the classroom and feel the energy of my students discovering what they are capable of when it comes to drawing!

CE 14 (re)Developing Your Drawing Style Tuesday, September 15 – November 3, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Matt Chapman

Art has a voice all its own – what is yours saying? This class focuses on creating a personal style. Demonstrations will emphasize experimentation with a variety of tools and techniques. The majority of studio time will be devoted to drawing or painting assignments followed by open discussions about your art-making experiences. This class will have you actively questioning your work with the goal of finding your unique voice as an artist. Basic drawing experience recommended.

CE 206 Illuminated Letters Thursday, September 17 – October 8, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Matt Chapman

The appreciation for a handwritten letter is timeless. As far back as the Middle Ages artists have been paying special attention to the alphabet by creating Illuminated Manuscript. This class looks at the alphabet as an opportunity for art, using a letter as the frame, artists will create letterforms that are made up of objects or environments that are of their particular interest. Through use of drawing mediums like ink and watercolor, or painting mediums like acrylic, the artist will develop skills necessary to create beautiful hand-crafted letters. Applications of this skill can be found in event invitations, monograms, book arts, or stand alone pieces of art to be displayed on the wall. Basic drawing experience recommended.
